The Keepsake Apple

“The apple trees does not need the fruit that it produces. Yet, it gives the entirety of its life over to producing it for those who do. And I often wonder what would happen if we were more like a tree.”

-Craig D. Lounsbrough

Name: Keepsake

Origin: The Keepsake apple was developed by the University of Minnesota in 1978. It’s a cross between the Frostbite and Northern Spy apple.

Appearance: The Keepsake apple is quite unique and has a “knobby” look. It’s mostly red to red-maroon  with a yellowish base color. The Keepsake apple looks and feels heritage. It has a mild yellow flesh as well.

Flavor: The Keepsake apple only gets better with time. It is a juicy, dense, and sweet apple that has a flavor similar to sugarcane.

Texture: Firm

Season: Mid September–early October

Storage: 6 + months refrigerated—Keepsake lives up to it’s name, flavor gets better with storage!

Use: Unique eating apple, cooking, and cider
